Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SAP Crystal Reports 2008 (Reporting Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component MessagingSystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 03/13/2012 by Dmitry Chastuchin with ERPScan as DSECRG-12-020 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at service.sap.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 184 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sap.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
