A vulnerability was found in VLC Media Player (Multimedia Player Software) (version now known) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file Ogg/Theora. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 06/20/2007 by David Thiel with iSEC Partners (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3316 since 06/21/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25695 (Debian DSA-1332-1 : vlc - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
