Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.2.2 Table Manipulation Operations memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.2.2 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Table Manipulation Operations Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Certain page table manipulation operations in Xen 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and earlier are not preemptible, which allows local PV kernels to cause a denial of service via vectors related to "deep page table traversal."

The weakness was shared 05/02/2013 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1918 since 02/19/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79505 (OracleVM 3.2 : xen (OVMSA-2013-0036)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370044 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX137657)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83969), Tenable (79505), SecurityFocus (BID 59615†), OSVDB (92983†) and Secunia (SA53187†). The entries VDB-8472, VDB-8474 and VDB-8600 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
