Linux Kernel 3.5 ChipIdia Controller Modules Content Stream memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.5 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component ChipIdia Controller Modules Content Stream Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The host_start function in drivers/usb/chipidea/host.c in the Linux kernel before 3.7.4 does not properly support a certain non-streaming option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) by sending a large amount of network traffic through a USB/Ethernet adapter.

The weakness was disclosed 01/12/2013 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2058 since 02/19/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76665 (RHEL 6 : MRG (RHSA-2013:1264)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84049), Tenable (76665), SecurityFocus (BID 59055†), OSVDB (92998†) and Secunia (SA54878†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
