Details
A vulnerability has been found in hostapd and wpa_supplicant up to 2.5 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component WPS Operation Handler. The manipulation of the argument passphrase with the input value \n\r leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
hostapd 0.6.7 through 2.5 and wpa_supplicant 0.6.7 through 2.5 do not reject \n and \r characters in passphrase parameters, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon outage) via a crafted WPS operation.
The weakness was shared 05/09/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4476 since 05/03/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
