A vulnerability was found in OpenAFS up to 1.6.16 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function newEntry of the file ptserver/ptprocs.c. The newEntry function in ptserver/ptprocs.c in OpenAFS before 1.6.17 allows remote authenticated users from foreign Kerberos realms to bypass intended access restrictions and create arbitrary groups as administrators by leveraging mishandling of the creator ID.
The weakness was presented 05/13/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at openafs.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2860 since 03/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 1.6.17 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
