FreeBSD 9.3/10.1/10.2/10.3 Keyboard Driver memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FreeBSD 9.3/10.1/10.2/10.3 (Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Keyboard Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The advisory summarizes:

The atkbd(4) driver, together with the atkbdc(4) driver, provides access to the AT 84 keyboard or the AT enhanced keyboard which is connected to the AT keyboard controller. The driver is required for the console driver syscons(4) or vt(4). The driver exposes its own ioctl(2) interface to allow it to be configured from userland through the kbdcontrol(1) utility.

The weakness was presented 05/17/2016 as FreeBSD-SA-16:18.atkbd as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-1886 since 01/13/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Incorrect signedness comparison in the ioctl(2) handler allows a malicious local user to overwrite a portion of the kernel memory.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92923 (FreeBSD : FreeBSD -- Buffer overflow in keyboard driver (7bbc0e8c-600a-11e6-a6c3-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting sysctl hw.kbd.keymap_restrict_change=4. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (44211), Tenable (92923), SecurityFocus (BID 90734†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1035905†). See VDB-87544 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
