A vulnerability has been found in PHP up to 5.5.21/5.6.5 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality in the library ext/libxml/libxml.c of the component PHP-FPM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
ext/libxml/libxml.c in PHP before 5.5.22 and 5.6.x before 5.6.6, when PHP-FPM is used, does not isolate each thread from libxml_disable_entity_loader changes in other threads, which allows remote attackers to conduct XML External Entity (XXE) and XML Entity Expansion (XEE) attacks via a crafted XML document, a related issue to CVE-2015-5161.
The weakness was published 05/22/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8866 since 04/23/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.5.22 or 5.6.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
