Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.5.4 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component BPF Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The BPF subsystem in the Linux kernel before 4.5.5 mishandles reference counts, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted application on (1) a system with more than 32 Gb of memory, related to the program reference count or (2) a 1 Tb system, related to the map reference count.
The weakness was published 05/23/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4558 since 05/06/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91241 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2016-703)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196506 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-raspi2 Vulnerabilities (USN-3007-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39773) and Tenable (91241). Similar entries are available at VDB-82462 and VDB-87606. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
