A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). Affected is the function vmsvga_fifo_read_raw of the file hw/display/vmware_vga.c of the component VGA Command Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The vmsvga_fifo_read_raw function in hw/display/vmware_vga.c in QEMU allows local OS guest administrators to obtain sensitive host memory information or cause a denial of service (QEMU process crash) by changing FIFO registers and issuing a VGA command, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.
The weakness was presented 06/01/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-4454 since 05/02/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94758 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : qemu (SUSE-SU-2016:2781-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176848 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DLA 1599-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
