A vulnerability was found in dosfstools up to 3.x. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function set_fat of the file fat.c of the component FAT12 Filesystem Handler. The set_fat function in fat.c in dosfstools before 4.0 might allow attackers to corrupt a FAT12 filesystem or cause a denial of service (invalid memory read and crash) by writing an odd number of clusters to the third to last entry on a FAT12 filesystem, which triggers an "off-by-two error."
The weakness was disclosed 06/03/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8872 since 05/14/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy.
