The weakness was presented 06/14/2016 by Ke Liu with Tencent as MS16-080 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-3203 since 03/15/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/23/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91607 (MS16-080: Security Update for Microsoft Windows PDF (3164302)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91233 (Microsoft Edge Cumulative Security Update (MS16-068)).
Applying the patch MS16-080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
