Details
A vulnerability was found in Netgear D3600 and D6000 up to 1.0.0.49 (Wireless LAN Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Private Key. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a hard-coded key vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-321. The use of a hard-coded cryptographic key significantly increases the possibility that encrypted data may be recovered. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
NETGEAR D3600 devices with firmware 1.0.0.49 and D6000 devices with firmware 1.0.0.49 and earlier use the same hardcoded private key across different customers' installations, which allows remote attackers to defeat cryptographic protection mechanisms by leveraging knowledge of this key from another installation.
The weakness was shared 06/20/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8288 since 11/19/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/12/2024). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
