A vulnerability was found in bzip2 1.0.6. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function bzip2recover. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Use-after-free vulnerability in bzip2recover in bzip2 1.0.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted bzip2 file, related to block ends set to before the start of the block.
The weakness was shared 06/20/2016 by Andrej Nemec as Bug 1319648 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-3189 since 03/15/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
