A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.6.3 (Operating System). This issue affects the function mt_rand of the file arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c of the component APICv State Handler. The manipulation of the argument https:/bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1337806 with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c in the Linux kernel through 4.6.3 mishandles the APICv on/off state, which allows guest OS users to obtain direct APIC MSR access on the host OS, and consequently cause a denial of service (host OS crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code on the host OS, via x2APIC mode.
The weakness was presented 05/20/2016 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4440 since 05/02/2016.
