A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the component WebDAV XML Message Handler. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1699 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15455 (MS04-030: WebDAV XML Message Handler Denial of Service (824151)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90188 (WebDAV XML Message Handler Denial of Service (MS04-030)).
Applying the patch MS04-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12043. In this case the pattern PROPFIND is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31370.
