CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Symantec Endpoint Protection on Windows (Anti-Malware Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Client IDS Driver. The manipulation as part of a PE File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The bug was discovered 07/07/2016. The weakness was presented 07/07/2016 by Piotr Bania with Cisco Talos as SYM16-013 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at symantec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5308 since 06/06/2016. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

Symantec was notified of a system crash, Denial of Service (DoS) in the CIDS engine driver when interacting with a specifically-crafted portable-executable (PE) files. A malicious individual would first need to entice an authorized user to download a malformed PE file either through opening an email attachment, downloading a malicious document or application or by enticing the user to visit a web site where a malicious file could be downloaded to their system. Once downloaded, the malicious file must be manipulated on the targeted system hard drive to interact with the vulnerable CIDS engine. Sufficiently malformed, the code would execute at the kernel-level with system privileges causing memory corruption resulting in a system crash.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370082 (Symantec Client IDS Driver PE File Memory Corruption Vulnerability in Symantec Products.).

Upgrading to version CIDS 15.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 91608†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1036265†). See VDB-88829 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
