The NICM.SYS kernel driver 3.1.11.0 in Novell Client 4.91 SP5 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003; Novell Client 2 SP2 on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008; and Novell Client 2 SP3 on Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted 0x143B6B IOCTL call.
The weakness was shared 05/22/2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at novell.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3956 since 06/05/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at pastebin.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
