Apple Safari up to 9.1.1 WebKit race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple Safari up to 9.1.1 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

WebKit in Apple iOS before 9.3.3, Safari before 9.1.2, and tvOS before 9.2.2 allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and obtain image date from an unintended web site via a timing attack involving an SVG document.

The weakness was released 07/18/2016 by Roeland Krak (Mikhail) with Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions as HT206900 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-4583 since 05/11/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

A timing issue existed in the processing of SVG. This issue was addressed through improved validation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92358 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 9.1.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196576 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Webkit2gtk Vulnerabilities (USN-3079-1)).

Upgrading to version 9.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92358) and SecurityFocus (BID 91830†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-89671, VDB-89672, VDB-89673 and VDB-89674. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
