Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.5 bsdiff integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.5 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component bsdiff. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer signedness error in bspatch.c in bspatch in bsdiff, as used in Apple OS X before 10.11.6 and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) via a crafted patch file.

The weakness was released 07/18/2016 by Stefan Esser with Zero Day Initiative as HT206903 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-9862 since 06/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

An integer overflow existed in bspatch. This issue was addressed through improved bounds checking.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94518 (Debian DLA-697-1 : bsdiff security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370095 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.6 and Security Update 2016-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-07-18-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94518) and SecurityFocus (BID 91824†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-89684, VDB-89686, VDB-89687 and VDB-89690.
