Integer overflow in the EVP_EncryptUpdate function in crypto/evp/evp_enc.c in OpenSSL before 1.0.1t and 1.0.2 before 1.0.2h allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via a large amount of data.
The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2016 by Guido Vranken as HT206903 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2106. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple issues existed in OpenSSL. These issues were resolved by backporting the fixes from OpenSSL 1.0.2h/1.0.1 to OpenSSL 0.9.8.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93118 (RHEL 7 : JBoss Web Server (RHSA-2016:1648) (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196457 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Openssl Vulnerabilities (USN-2959-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
