A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows XP on 64-bit (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SMTP DNS Reply Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) component of Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit Edition, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 64-bit Edition, and the Exchange Routing Engine component of Exchange Server 2003, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malicious DNS response message containing length values that are not properly validated.
The bug was discovered 10/12/2004. The weakness was presented 10/12/2004 with Microsoft as MS04-035 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0840 since 09/08/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15464 (Microsoft Windows/Exchange SMTP DNS Lookup Overflow (885881)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74167 (Microsoft Windows SMTP Component Remote Code Execution (MS04-035)).
Applying the patch MS04-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3054.
