Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM AIX 6.1/7.1 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component IPv6 Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The IPv6 implementation in the inet subsystem in IBM AIX 6.1 and 7.1, and VIOS 2.2.2.2-FP-26 SP-02, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted packet to an IPv6 interface.
The issue has been introduced in 11/09/2007. The weakness was released 06/04/2013 as inet_advisory.asc as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at aix.software.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3035 since 04/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2034 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71164 (AIX 6.1 TL 9 : bos.net.tcp.client (U855283)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121253 (IBM AIX Inet Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling IPv6. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84657), Tenable (71164), SecurityFocus (BID 60348†), OSVDB (93951†) and Secunia (SA53687†). www-01.ibm.com is providing further details. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
