A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8.3 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function RANDOM_HEX_STR of the file sys/openbsd/stack_protector.c of the component Setuid. The manipulation of the argument stack-guard with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does

sys/openbsd/stack_protector.c in libc in Apple iOS 6.1.3 and Mac OS X 10.8.x does not properly parse the Apple strings employed in the user-space stack-cookie implementation, which allows local users to bypass cookie randomization by executing a program with a call-path beginning with the stack-guard= substring, as demonstrated by an iOS untethering attack or an attack against a setuid Mac OS X program.
The weakness was published 04/26/2013 by Stefan Esser with SektionEins GmbH as not defined article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at antid0te.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3951 since 06/05/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/21/2024).
