Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Archiva (the affected version unknown). This affects an unknown part of the component XML DTD Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability (Connection). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
XML external entity (XXE) vulnerability in the Apache XML-RPC (aka ws-xmlrpc) library 3.1.3, as used in Apache Archiva, allows remote attackers to conduct server-side request forgery (SSRF) attacks via a crafted DTD.
The weakness was released 07/08/2016 by 0ang3el as Beware of ws-xmlrpc library in your Java App as not defined advisory (Blogspot). The advisory is shared at 0ang3el.blogspot.ru. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5002 since 05/24/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by 0ang3el in XML/Java and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 120400 (Fedora 28 : 1:xmlrpc (2018-4ac4229aa8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277396 (Fedora Security Update for xmlrpc (FEDORA-2018-4ac4229aa8)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
