Summary
A vulnerability was found in International Components for Unicode up to 57.1. It has been rated as critical. This impacts the function uloc_acceptLanguageFromHTTP of the file common/uloc.cpp. Performing a manipulation of the argument httpAcceptLanguage with the input $software_input_value results in memory corruption.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-6293. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit.
Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in International Components for Unicode up to 57.1. This affects the function uloc_acceptLanguageFromHTTP of the file common/uloc.cpp. The manipulation of the argument httpAcceptLanguage with the input value \0 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The uloc_acceptLanguageFromHTTP function in common/uloc.cpp in International Components for Unicode (ICU) through 57.1 for C/C++ does not ensure that there is a '\0' character at the end of a certain temporary array, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a call with a long httpAcceptLanguage argument.
The weakness was presented 07/25/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.php.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-6293 since 07/24/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/09/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92556 (PHP 7.0.x < 7.0.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175896 (Debian Security Update for icu (DSA 3725-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
