Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in OpenSSL up to 1.0.2h. This impacts the function TS_OBJ_print_bio in the library crypto/ts/ts_lib.c of the component X.509 Public Key Infrastructure Time-Stamp Protocol Handler. The manipulation of the argument timestamp results in out-of-bounds.
This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2016-2180. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.2h (Network Encryption Software). Affected is the function TS_OBJ_print_bio in the library crypto/ts/ts_lib.c of the component X.509 Public Key Infrastructure Time-Stamp Protocol Handler. The manipulation of the argument timestamp with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The TS_OBJ_print_bio function in crypto/ts/ts_lib.c in the X.509 Public Key Infrastructure Time-Stamp Protocol (TSP) implementation in OpenSSL through 1.0.2h allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted time-stamp file that is mishandled by the "openssl ts" command.
The weakness was released 08/01/2016 by Shi Lei as USN-3087-1 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2180 since 01/29/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 09/09/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95255 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory21.asc (SWEET32)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316384 (Cisco Unity Express OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20160927-openssl)).
A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
