A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD up to 1.2.10 (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component User Account Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. ProFTPD 1.2.x, including 1.2.8 and 1.2.10, responds in a different amount of time when a given username exists, which allows remote attackers to identify valid usernames by timing the server response.
The bug was discovered 10/15/2004. The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2004 by Leon Juranic with LSS Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.lss.hr. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1602 since 02/20/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15484 (ProFTPD Login Timing Account Name Enumeration), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27255 (ProFTPD Authentication Delay Username Enumeration Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at proftpd.org.
