Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows 10 Gold and 1511 allow remote attackers to hijack network traffic or bypass intended Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM) or application container protection mechanisms, and consequently render untrusted content in a browser, by leveraging how NetBIOS validates responses, aka "NetBIOS Spoofing Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 08/09/2016 with Microsoft as MS16-077 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-3299 since 03/15/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/07/2017). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91605 (MS16-077: Security Update for WPAD (3165191)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.
Applying the patch MS16-077 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
