A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg (Multimedia Processing Software) (version unknown). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function smv_img_pnt of the file libavcodec/smvjpegdec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 06/08/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind as avcodec/smvjpegdec: copy palette too as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at OSVDB (94130†) and Secunia (SA53766†). The entries VDB-9108, VDB-9109, VDB-9129 and VDB-9130 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
