A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.0.6 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component XML Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 06/10/2013 by Tanya Secker with Trustwave's SpiderLabs as TWSL2013-007 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.spiderlabs.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with VideoLAN. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3564 since 05/21/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
