Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple Safari (Web Browser) (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component HTTP/2 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (HEIST). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The HTTP/2 protocol does not consider the role of the TCP congestion window in providing information about content length, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain cleartext data by leveraging a web-browser configuration in which third-party cookies are sent, aka a "HEIST" attack.
The weakness was presented 08/03/2016 by Mathy Vanhoef and Tom Van Goethem with iMinds-DistriNet as HEIST: HTTP Encrypted Information can be Stolen through TCP-windows as confirmed paper (Blackhat). The advisory is available at blackhat.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7153 since 09/06/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/08/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.
