Strato Control Panel Output Display DOM cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Strato Control Panel. This affects an unknown function of the component Output Display. The manipulation results in cross site scripting (DOM). The attack may be performed from remote. In addition, an exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Strato Control Panel (version unknown). Affected is an unknown function of the component Output Display. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (DOM). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity.

The weakness was presented 08/24/2011 by Benjamin Kunz Mejri as VL-ID 141 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vulnerability-lab.com. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

A public exploit has been developed by Benjamin Kunz Mejri and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at vulnerability-lab.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
