A vulnerability classified as critical was found in VMware Workstation and Player on Windows (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part in the library tpview.dll of the component Cortado ThinPrint. The manipulation as part of a EMF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/13/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (window) with Google as VMSA-2016-0014 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7082 since 08/23/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 12.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
