The GeoServices component in Apple iOS before 10 and watchOS before 3 does not properly restrict access to PlaceData information, which allows attackers to discover physical locations via a crafted application.
The weakness was presented 09/13/2016 by Razvan Deaconescu, Mihai Chiroiu, Luke Deshotels, William Enck, Lucas Vincenzo Davi and Ahmad-Reza Sadeghi with DinoSec as HT207141 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4719 since 05/11/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. A permissions issue existed in PlaceData. This issue was addressed through improved permission validation.
