Details
A vulnerability has been found in MyBB 1.8.6 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file /mybb_1806/Upload/admin/index.php. The manipulation of the argument threadsperpage with the input value 20 procedure analyse(extractvalue(rand(),concat(0x3a,version())),1); leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2016 with Curesec Research Team as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 230 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:mybb_1806/Upload/admin/index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
