Details
A vulnerability was found in Exponent CMS up to v2.3.9 (Content Management System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the file /exponent/index.php. The manipulation with the input value '%20or%201%3d1--%20 leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 09/09/2016. The weakness was presented 09/20/2016 by Manuel Garcia Cardenas as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:exponent/index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at exponentcms.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
