Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 11 on Win7 (Web Browser). This affects some unknown functionality of the component CORS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The advisory summarizes:
I tested on IE11 running on Win7SP1 with all security patches and it worked. On Win10 didn't work. I didn't test in any server with CORS enabled.
The weakness was presented 09/21/2016 by Ricardo Iramar as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The mailinglist post contains:
I've contacted Microsoft and they say this is not a security issue so I'm sharing it.The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Ricardo Iramar and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The advisory illustrates:
The file above will be able to get an skype token and perform get on the user profile. Instead of using alert() function I could send this information to a domain that I have control. Of course the victim needs to open the file from his local drive or maybe another application can open an IE instance.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
