A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 48 (Web Browser). This affects the function mozilla::gfx::FilterSupport::ComputeSourceNeededRegions of the component Canvas Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the mozilla::gfx::FilterSupport::ComputeSourceNeededRegions function in Mozilla Firefox before 49.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging improper interaction between empty filters and CANVAS element rendering.
The weakness was published 09/22/2016 as MFSA2016-85 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5275. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction.
