A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 48 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Preloaded Public Key Pinning. Mozilla Firefox before 49.0 and Firefox ESR 45.x before 45.4 rely on unintended expiration dates for Preloaded Public Key Pinning, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof add-on updates by leveraging possession of an X.509 server certificate for addons.mozilla.org signed by an arbitrary built-in Certification Authority.
The weakness was shared 09/22/2016 by Brian Carpenter (ryan) as Bug 1303127 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-5284 since 06/03/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
