Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.11 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Kerberos v5 PAM module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (User). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) PAM module in Apple OS X before 10.12 does not use constant-time operations for determining username validity, which makes it easier for remote attackers to enumerate user accounts via a timing side-channel attack.
The weakness was presented 09/20/2016 by Meder Kydyraliev (Shrek_wzw) with Zero Day Initiative as HT207170 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-4745 since 05/11/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
A timing side channel allowed an attacker to determine the existence of user accounts on a system. This issue was addressed by introducing constant time checks.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93685 (macOS < 10.12 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c.
Upgrading to version 10.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
