Details
A vulnerability was found in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 12.0.x/12.1.x (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing in the library secars.dll of the component Management Console. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in secars.dll in the management console in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) 12.1.x before 12.1.3, and Symantec Endpoint Protection Center (SPC) Small Business Edition 12.0.x, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was shared 06/18/2013 by Jerome Nokin and Thierry Zoller with Verizon Enterprise Solutions (GCIS Vulnerability Management) as SYM13-005 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at symantec.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1612 since 02/04/2013. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by st3n in Perl and been published 12 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66927 (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager < 12.1 RU3 (SYM13-005) (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121281 (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Buffer Overflow (SYM13-005)). The advisory illustrates:
Symantec is not aware of any customers affected by this issue or any malicious attempts to exploit this issue.
Upgrading to version 12.1.3 (RU3) eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Symantec Security Response will release IPS signature 26667 "Web Attack: Symantec Endpoint Remote Code Exec" that detects and blocks attempts to exploit this issue. Signatures are available through normal Symantec updates.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85083), Exploit-DB (33056), Tenable (66927), SecurityFocus (BID 60542†) and OSVDB (94421†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
