The weakness was presented 10/11/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Project Zero as MS16-123 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3376 since 03/15/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94012 (MS16-123: Security Update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers (3192892)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91289 (Microsoft Windows Security Update for Kernel-Mode Drivers (MS16-123)).
Applying the patch MS16-123 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
