A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.17/15.006.30201/15.017.20053 (Document Reader Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The vendor advisory states that the initial disclosure was October 6, 2016. But it appears that the advisory got released on October 11, 2016 to the public. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-6988 since 08/23/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94074 (Adobe Reader < 11.0.18 / 15.006.30243 / 15.020.20039 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-33) (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370154 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB16-33)).
Upgrading to version 11.0.18, 15.006.30243 or 15.020.20039 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
