A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in systemd up to 231. This issue affects the function manager_invoke_notify_message of the component Notify Socket. The manager_invoke_notify_message function in systemd 231 and earlier allows local users to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and PID 1 hang) via a zero-length message received over a notify socket.
The weakness was released 10/13/2016 by Andrew (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7795 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
