CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.2. This affects the function proc_keys_show of the file security/keys/proc.c of the component gcc Stack Protector. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption (Memory). This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-7042. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.2 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function proc_keys_show of the file security/keys/proc.c of the component gcc Stack Protector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The proc_keys_show function in security/keys/proc.c in the Linux kernel through 4.8.2, when the GNU Compiler Collection (gcc) stack protector is enabled, uses an incorrect buffer size for certain timeout data, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (stack memory corruption and panic) by reading the /proc/keys file.

The weakness was disclosed 10/16/2016 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7042 since 08/23/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94736 (Ubuntu 16.10 : linux vulnerability (USN-3129-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175865 (Debian Security Update for linux (DSA 3696-1) (Dirty Cow)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94736) and SecurityFocus (BID 93544†). The entry VDB-94992 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
