Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function arcmsr_iop_message_xfer of the file drivers/scsi/arcmsr/arcmsr_hba.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The arcmsr_iop_message_xfer function in drivers/scsi/arcmsr/arcmsr_hba.c in the Linux kernel through 4.8.2 does not restrict a certain length field, which allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) via an ARCMSR_MESSAGE_WRITE_WQBUFFER control code.
The weakness was shared 10/16/2016 by Marco Grassi (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7425 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95433 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux-lts-xenial vulnerabilities (USN-3146-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169286 (OpenSuSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2016:2583-1) (Dirty Cow)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
