Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenSSH (Connectivity Software) (affected version not known). This affects the function kex_input_kexinit of the component Key Exchange Initialization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The bug was discovered 10/19/2016. The weakness was disclosed 10/10/2016 by Shi Lei as Revision 1.127 as confirmed patch (CVS). The advisory is shared at cvsweb.openbsd.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8858 since 10/19/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Unregister the KEXINIT handler after message has been received. Otherwise an unauthenticated peer can repeat the KEXINIT and cause allocation of up to 128MB -- until the connection is closed.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95604 (GLSA-201612-18 : OpenSSH: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38753 (NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP Multiple Vulnerabilities (NTAP-20171208-0001,NTAP-20180201-0001,NTAP-20171107-0002)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cvsweb.openbsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
