Details
A vulnerability was found in WineBottler up to 1.8-rc4. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Updater. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a channel accessible vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-300. The product does not adequately verify the identity of actors at both ends of a communication channel, or does not adequately ensure the integrity of the channel, in a way that allows the channel to be accessed or influenced by an actor that is not an endpoint. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/29/2016. The weakness was shared 10/17/2016 by Florian Bogner as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1557.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 141 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding HTTPS/SSL as an encryption mechanism. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:
Tried a last time to get in touch with the developer – again no success (...) All request should be carried out over encrypted communication channels like HTTPS. The author already mentioned (https://mike.kronenberg.org/winebottler-1-7-52/) that he is planing to do so in the future. Yet, right now there is no patch available. The only workaround would be to block outgoing (HTTP) connections - However, whenever I tried that WineBottler stalled...
